LISTENING · TECHNIQUE GUIDE
Listening Fill in the Blanks
Predict the missing word class before the audio reaches the gap.
What to look for
- Grammar immediately before/after the gap
- Likely collocation
- Sound details such as endings
Decision process
- Scan the sentence before audio
- Predict noun/verb/adjective/adverb where possible
- Listen for the whole phrase, not only the blank
- Check spelling and grammatical fit
Common traps
- Waiting until the gap to understand context
- Ignoring word endings
- Typing a synonym rather than the spoken word
Apply it
“a ___ increase” strongly suggests an adjective before you even hear the missing word.
Now try it on your own sentence.
